The results of Canada’s 2025 federal election have shaken the country’s political scene, with a significant number of seats changing hands and a dramatic reshuffling of party leadership. Though the government may not have changed hands, the election results were anything but predictable.

Key Election Outcomes

A total of 59 seats, or 17% of the 343 seats in the House of Commons, changed hands in this election, a major increase from just 7% in 2021. This shift marks a significant departure from the political status quo. The redistribution of seats, which grew from 338 to 343 due to population changes, has redrawn Canada’s political map, affecting both larger and smaller parties.

Leadership Upsets

The election saw several high-profile leaders lose their seats, a rare event in Canadian politics. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, once seen as a prime minister-in-waiting just a few months ago, lost his seat in Carleton, Ontario, to the Liberals. Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), resigned after finishing third in his Burnaby Central riding in British Columbia. Additionally, the Green Party’s co-leader Jonathan Pedneault placed fifth in Outremont, Quebec.

On the other hand, Yves-François Blanchet of the Bloc Québécois and Elizabeth May, co-leader of the Green Party, both managed to hold on to their seats. Meanwhile, Mark Carney, a former Bank of Canada governor, became an MP for the first time.

The NDP’s Decline

The NDP faced significant losses, shedding 17 of its 24 seats, with 10 going to the Conservatives and 7 to the Liberals. As a result, the party failed to secure the 12 seats needed to maintain its official status in Parliament. This outcome means the NDP will lose access to crucial parliamentary funding, including office budgets and technology, and will have fewer opportunities to question the government or sit on committees.

Small Party Struggles

The smaller parties, in general, faced a tough night. The Bloc Québécois lost 13 seats, most of them to the Liberals. In some cases, the results were so close that judicial recounts were needed. For instance, the riding of Terrebonne, a suburb of Montreal, was won by the Liberals by just a single vote. The Greens, meanwhile, lost their Kitchener Centre riding in Ontario, marking the first time the Conservatives took a seat previously held by the Greens.

The Liberal and Conservative Showdown

Despite the overall shift, both the Liberals and Conservatives had their share of victories and losses. The Liberals lost 16 seats, all to the Conservatives, which is double the number they lost in 2021. A significant portion of those losses came from Toronto and the surrounding “905” area. Preliminary results had suggested that the Conservatives took another seat in Milton East-Halton Hills South, but after a judicial recount, the Liberals managed to hold on to it by just 21 votes.

The Conservatives also faced some setbacks, with 12 of their MPs being defeated, including Poilievre. The Liberals managed to win these seats, including Toronto St. Paul’s, which the Conservatives had previously flipped in a 2024 by-election.

The Shift in Toronto

Toronto, a traditionally Liberal stronghold, saw its political landscape shift during this election. The Liberals retained most of the city’s seats, but the Conservatives managed to flip eight of them from red to blue. The NDP also lost its only seat in the area to the Liberals.

What’s Next for Canada’s Political Future?

The 2025 election results highlight a fundamental shift in Canada’s political landscape. Smaller parties, including the NDP and the Bloc Québécois, are finding themselves sidelined as the Liberals and Conservatives continue to dominate. The Liberals have gained ground in key areas, while the Conservatives are struggling to maintain their footing.

With several party leaders stepping down and new faces entering Parliament, Canada’s political scene is likely to see even more changes in the years to come. As the dust settles, the long-term implications of this election will shape the country’s policies and future direction.

For now, Canadians are left to reflect on the surprising turn of events in their federal election, with a clearer picture emerging of a more competitive and unpredictable political environment in the years ahead.
